The full description

Can science explain the paranormal—or create it?

Alex repairs furniture for a living. He knows how to find what’s loose, what’s broken, what someone else has tried to hide.

Then he hears a man crying behind a small door in his building’s basement. When it is opened, there isn’t room for anyone inside.

Alex has spent years learning to live with ADHD—with sounds he cannot ignore and work that absorbs him for hours. But he cannot account for the time he has spent at the door—or the stranger he begins to see afterward.

His wife, Sarah, is trying to return to scientific research. She wants to understand what he is experiencing, and asks him to separate what happened from what he thinks it means. Emma, an old friend whose work with paranormal investigators offers another way to listen, helps Alex pursue his questions.

Alex wants to keep searching. Sarah wants him to keep his promises. As he confides in Emma, Sarah begins to wonder how much he is leaving out.

The Quiet is a literary supernatural novel about perception, grief, and the cost of being believed.

The story behind the book

The Quiet grew from questions about attention, perception, and the gap between an experience and its explanation. In his author’s note, Jason Trama describes wondering whether impressions sometimes begin with ordinary cues noticed before their significance is understood.

Those questions helped shape Alex. The novel draws on research into ADHD, sensory processing, time perception, and memory, while keeping the characters’ need to be heard and believed at the center of the story.

The author’s note distinguishes the research from the invention. It does not claim that ADHD enables supernatural perception. The characters, research institutions, and central clinical study are fictional.

Story ideas for editors and producers

When an explanation becomes a verdict

Alex wants someone to take his experience seriously. Sarah wants to know what happened. Their marriage gives a human scale to a difficult question: how do you listen to someone when you do not share their explanation?

Potential fit: books and culture coverage, relationship features, literary podcasts, book clubs.

Writing a protagonist with ADHD

Sounds Alex cannot ignore, work that absorbs him, and time he cannot account for shape his daily life. An interview about writing attention from inside a character’s experience, without treating a diagnosis as proof of a supernatural gift.

Potential fit: neurodiversity media, adult ADHD outlets, fiction craft podcasts.

A scientist writes a ghost story

Trama’s biomedical background informs a novel in which evidence matters but cannot settle every disagreement. A conversation about drawing on research, deciding where fiction begins, and allowing uncertainty to remain part of the reading experience.

Potential fit: science and culture programs, author interviews, literary and supernatural fiction coverage.

The sound of an empty room

A man crying behind a small basement door. A stranger Alex begins to see afterward. The Quiet builds unease through listening and the possibility that an ordinary place holds something its occupants cannot explain.

Potential fit: horror and suspense podcasts, Halloween reading coverage, sound and storytelling features.
